Whack-A-Mole

The last 10 days here have been challenging, to say the least. And not even challenging for any interesting reason, but more just for the fact that nothing ever stabilizes in a small business. It’s like a big game of Whack-A-Mole…once you knock out one issue, another one pops up. Good times.

I think it correlates to the mid-summer, so look at other years to see if I was complaining about the same thing:

  1. 2021: We were deep into the regularly scheduled college employee refrain of “my schedule is changing in a few weeks". To distract myself, I argued against the term “boss babe” on shirts and cups until we see Jon Hamm holding a cup that says “boss hottie”. I’m still waiting.

  2. 2020: We sampled a Depression Era Water Pie for the monthly pie tasting and had to throw it away before customers even tried it. A Depression Era Water Pie tastes like depression and well, water. Since we were mid-pandemic, it felt spot on.

  3. 2019: We were choosing colors for PJP Nifong while still housed in our Buttonwood space. And ironically this month, we changed all those colors to new colors. Sounds right.

  4. 2018: We completely lost our minds for a few days and considered signing up as a vendor for all these fall festivals. Thankfully, we came to our senses. We do a lot of things well here, with the exception of taking this show on the road to different destinations.

  5. 2017: We spent a whole day making moon pies. This gives me a little nostalgia for who we were way back then, because we’ve certainly improved in area of focus and areas of sustainable growth. But there’s a lot of charm to going on a moon pie wingding for no solid reason, I’ll agree.

  6. 2016: I discussed turning the blog into a book. Spoiler alert: I totally didn’t. But I still think about it.

  7. 2015: Jeanne was deep into a crafting project that included chalk paint. If I recall, she painted pie tins and then hung them from a ladder and then hung the ladder in the window. And actually, that sounds spot on to exactly how she thinks about things now, so some things never change…
