No Context

Today someone left us a one star Google review and said that our peach pie didn’t taste much like peaches. And while I’ve progressed in so many ways as a human and as an entrepreneur in the past nine years, the one place that hasn’t changed much is COMMENTS LIKE THIS DESTROY ME. Since I personally made the pie to which she was referring and I would swear on a stack of bibles that it was sugar, flour, peaches, and cinnamon, how it doesn’t taste like peaches is a complete mystery. And she never called or emailed to say she was unhappy. I’m just at a loss. My skin is too thin for random criticism with no context.

Since we’ve established what hurt my feelings nine years ago is also what hurts my feelings today, let’s see what else we were doing this time of year in the past:

  1. 2022: Ellery and I were at Dallas Market and at PJP, our long term Travis was readying for his move to Dallas and I was sad. I still miss him, but he did coach me via text how to ensure we were front row for Jason Isbell. And now tomorrow is Elaine’s last day, so I’m basically heartbroken. She’s worked customer service for over three years and she’s relocating to Illinois for her husband’s work. She has made PJP such a better place and we will miss her so much. She promises to be back for Thanksgiving and we are holding her to it.

  2. 2021: Our elimination episode of Crime Scene Kitchen aired. I still hate croquembouches.

  3. 2020: We did a Trio Pie Tasting event…all flavors we do in threes, like Chocolate Cream, Almond Joy, and Chocolate Banana. Or Banoffee, Banana, and Coconut Banana. Honestly I don’t remember this but this but GENIUS. I’m adding to the calendar for July.

  4. 2019: We baked 500 tarts and sold them for $1.50 each. Apparently I have big ideas in the summertime, do them, and promptly never remember them again. Thank goodness my life is chronicled here.

  5. 2018: We shipped 420 Jelly Jars and it about did us in. Those were the halcyon days.

  6. 2017: Jeanne was photographed for the cover of the University Hospital magazine for her pulmonary embolism diagnosis and subsequent 10 day hospital stay. Only she would survive an embolism and end up as a feature story.

  7. 2016: We signed up for our first Roots and Blues Festival in hopes of wooing Jason Isbell to our booth. Now it’s called Treeline Festival and we just travel to see Jason Isbell.

  8. 2015: We were super amped that the new Starbucks was soon to open just down the parking lot from PJP Buttonwood. I would guess I’ve been there 10, 414 times since opening day.

  9. 2014: We were fresh off our very first pie tasting, wherein we made pies already on our menu. Today I planned the menu for next' week’s sold out pie tasting and even though I’m going to need to buy three pounds of ricotta cheese for one recipe, that’s still easier than prepping for the first pie tasting…
